Types
of Roles
Whatever your skills or special talents, there's a place
for you to use them on summer camp! There are three different
positions available and each one offers the chance to
get involved, get stuck in and get on!
Counsellor
'Counsellor' is the term given to the people on camp
who are in charge of campers' general well-being and
ensure that the kids get to enjoy all their activity
sessions safely.
It's likely that you'll end up
taking part in many of the activities, so while you
don't need to be an expert, a ‘have-a-go’
attitude is essential. On a typical day, you could find
yourself jumping from tennis, to archery, to pottery,
to finding yourself being dragged across a lake on one
of those inflatable banana things! You'll also find
yourself taking an active role in the general areas
of camp- such as looking after a table of kids at meal
times, performing skits at the flagpole and singing
round the camp fire which to complete your day.
And the role doesn't end once the
kids are in bed. Counsellors often take on the role
of 'bunk counsellors' where they'll sleep in with and
take charge of a cabin of kids. So if you have great
childcare experience, but less activity experience and
you fancy taking charge of your own tribe for the summer,
this role could be for you!
Activity Leaders
Spend the majority of your time assisting in one (or
more) particular activities making sure the kids enjoy
what they're doing and get the support and guidance
they need to improve!
If you have coaching experience,
are confident in your chosen field, can communicate
with people of all ages and know your way around a tennis
court, or a swimming pool (or whatever your chosen areas
are) we want to hear from you!
Of course it's not just about the
activities. You'll also take part in the craziness which
makes up camp life so be prepared to find yourself standing
on your chair and singing in the dining hall or telling
ghost stories round the camp fire!
Specialist
Specialists are the all-action heroes of summer camp.
They take on the overall responsibility of organising
and coaching a particular activity on camp.
They're the experts in their chosen field and are the
staff that Activity Leaders will assist - and most likely
learn a thing or two over the course of the summer from!
As a Specialist, it's likely that
your days will be dedicated to coaching one or two areas.
And although camps hire specialists in a wide variety
of areas, we're on the look out for applicants with
great experience and expertise in the following skills
areas:
Sports:
Archery
Canoeing
Kayaking
Golf
Gymnastics
Riding
High/Low Ropes
Tennis
Waterskiing |
Motorboat Driving
Windsurfing
Fencing
Riflery
Arts:
Ceramics
Woodwork
|
Of course, Specialists also play
a part in overall camp life, so you should expect to
have childcare duties and be prepared to take part in
other activities during the day and evening.
So, if you take your sport seriously,
have some prior experience and perhaps the odd certificate
or two and are all about the action, then this is where
it's at!
